How AI Is Paving New Roads in the Automotive Industry

Artificial intelligence (AI) has come far from the days of only navigation software. Machine learning, deep learning, and computer vision guide self-driving cars, manage fleets, assist drivers, automate supply chains, improve vehicle inspection and insurance, and more. AI also boosts manufacturing by accelerating production and helping reduce costs, ensuring greater efficiency, safety, reliability, and flexibility.

Manufacturing

Once upon a time, every stage of automotive production was handled by humans, from assembling the cars to taking care of the supply chain, procuring raw materials, managing dealerships, and more. Today, AI is a part of the entire process, from manufacturing, designing, and welding to painting and post-production.

AI-driven systems create a schedule and manage the entire workflow with robots working safely alongside humans on assembly lines and factory floors. These systems can identify defects in auto components; help with the supply chain; automate processes like equipment, tools, and labor requests; and improve inventory, tracking, and logistics.

Driver-assist and safety

AI-powered features alert drivers of potentially dangerous situations and report driving conditions while the car is moving. Forward-collision warning systems, blind-spot monitors, adaptive cruise control, driver-assisted steering, and cross-traffic detectors are all part of the sensory-based data to keep drivers safe. Drivers also get alerts on hazardous road conditions, lane crossing, blind spots, and even passengers and other vehicles in the traffic. In addition, AI-powered software can detect the head position and drowsiness of the driver and allow self-driving to take over.

AI is also driving the growth of driverless cars, helping to reduce the number of accidents, traffic congestion, and emission levels. Most autonomous vehicles use radar waves and LiDAR, a laser distancing system, to detect objects, streetlights, and pedestrians.

In-car experience

Artificial intelligence has revamped the in-car experience with virtual assistants that respond to voice commands and assist with directions, changing the temperature, playing media, and more. AI can also provide preferences based on user behavior, including seat position and screen adjustment, air input, and more. It can also control in-car infotainment through the use of human gestures.

Insurance

Dashboard cameras, smartphone cameras, and Internet of Things (IoT) sensors equipped with computer vision detection software can spot other objects on the road, sudden stops, and accidents. Since all of this can affect insurance deductions and premiums, insurance companies rely on these videos to adjust the driver’s insurance policy accordingly. Users can also upload images of their damaged car, which allows the software to detect the damage and provide repair costs. AI also speeds up the processing time of filing complaints and creates profiles based on individual risk factors in the data, which can predict how safe a driver will be.

The Future of AI in Cars

Car manufacturers are investing their time and efforts in developing innovative software and applications to control and upscale the user experience. For instance, voice and facial recognition and fingerprint sensory features will soon help you start your car. In addition, in-car AI-powered cameras will allow the vehicle to recognize other passengers and alter audio content for them. They’ll be able to monitor and recognize a passenger’s voice, gestures, body language, and facial expressions and ensure the driver is also aware and alert to their surroundings.

From driverless cars and contactless starts to gestures that power your Spotify playlist, artificial intelligence will infiltrate more and more of our driving lives in the years ahead. The value of AI in automotive manufacturing will exceed $10.73 billion by 2024. Smart automotive companies and manufacturers that want to succeed better buckle up.
